Extracurricular Activities

At Tokyo Cocoro Japanese Language School, students will be able to experience the "heart" of Japan outside of the classroom.

Extracurricular activities are held 8 times a year. Spring is the season of cherry blossoms, and as there are many cherry blossom viewing spots in the neighborhood and along train lines, we take part in "Hanami" (flower viewing) together. Speaking of summer in Japan, the first thing that comes to mind is the soothing chimes of "fuurin" (wind chimes). By visiting a wind chime workshop, we experience how these beautiful chimes are created, from glass blowing to painting, and even have the opportunity to create an original chime of our own. Feburary is the month of the Setsubun (last day of Winter) festival. It is close to the Chinese New Year and is one of Japan's bigger traditional festivals, with various shrines holding their own celebrations and holding "mame-maki" (bean throwing) ceremonies. The act of throwing beans, usually at people wearing Oni (demon) masks, symbolizes the driving out of evil spirits.

As we are located near big cities like Ikebukuro and Asakusa, we have taken our students to shrines and temples such as Sensoji to experience a traditional "mame-maki" ceremony in person. We do not stop at traditional experiences, however, and also take our students on excursions to famous theme parks such as Disneyland and Team Labo. In December, we have various plans, including a party hosted by the school.
